Lovett's fall mirrors department ills

W hen retired Savannah-Chatham police chief Willie Lovett walked out of the federal courthouse on Nov. 21 as a convicted felon, it was only the latest in a series of courtroom and/or administrative defeats for veteran officers linked to Lovett's inner circle. Twelve jurors in U.S. District Court determined that Lovett, first as a police major and later as chief, spent 10 years running interference from law enforcement for a traveling gambling operation headed by Randall Wayne "Red" Roach and extorted payoffs from Roach to make it happen.
