They called him "Silent Cal," but Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States - the second one born in Vermont and the only U.S. president to be born on the Fourth of July - said one of the most beautiful things I've ever read about the state. "If the spirit of liberty should vanish in other parts of the union... it could all be replenished from the generous store held by the people of this brave little state of Vermont," Coolidge said.
