Uruguay: Vazquez favored in presidential election

Ruling party candidate and former president Tabare Vazquez is favored to win Uruguay's runoff election Sunday on the back of a strong economy, a result that would help secure the country's pioneering marijuana laws. Five polls show the left-leaning Vazquez, 74, ahead of center-right challenger Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou by a roughly 10 percentage point margin.

Quest for the Perfect Cup of Coffee--Finally fulfilled

I admit that I have been partial to Starbucks' Pumpkin Spice Soy Lattes this time of year, but now that Starbucks has teamed up with Monsanto, that latte seems much less appetizing. What's a girl to do? Not that I bought that much Starbucks coffee before, it's pricey.

Israel's Jewish state bill: assessing the wider impact

NAZARETH, Israel: There could hardly have been a more fitting piece of political theater this week as Palestinian legislators in the Israeli Parliament criticized a controversial new bill defining Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people. The proposed legislation, which was approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government on Sunday, is expected to get its first reading in the parliament, or Knesset, next week.

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham first floated the idea that he might run for president in 2016 a month ago, and he recently got encouragement from a likely place: his close friend and political ally Sen. Ben Carson Presidential Campaign Limps Behind Even Mitt Romney's

It is a time of fear in the face of freedom, a time of an emptying country and swelling cities, a time for the widening of previous roads and the opening of new paths, yet a time when these paths are mined by knowing algorithms of the all-seeing eye. It is the time of the warrior's peace and the miser's charity, when the planting of a seed is an act of conscientious objection.

Why have we all forgotten to say - thank you'?

Boil away all the romance of the Thanksgiving origin story and what you get is this: a band of religious separatists on the brink of starvation who celebrated their first successful harvest with a feast. A century and a half later, George Washington proclaimed a day of "public thanksgiving" to acknowledge the "Signal Favours of Almighty God," by which he meant not being annihilated by the British.

Is CAIR a Terror Group?

We who follow the Islamist movement fell off our collective chair on Nov. 15 when the news came that the United Arab Emirates' ministerial cabinet had listed the Council on American-Islamic Relations as one of 83 proscribed terrorist organizations, up there with the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and ISIS. This came as a surprise because the UAE authorities themselves have a record of promoting Islamism; because CAIR has a history of raising funds in the UAE; and because the UAE embassy in Washington had previously praised CAIR.

Obama Buys 17 Titles At Independent Bookstore

President Barack Obama tried to draw attention to independently owned businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, a day that is increasingly being marketed as one for deal-hungry consumers to remember to patronize these mom-and-pop outlets while doing their holiday shopping. Highlights of testimony in Michael Brown shooting

Michael Brown became so angry when he was stopped by Officer Darren Wilson on Canfield Drive here on Aug. 9, his face looked "like a demon," the officer would later tell a grand jury. He testified that when Brown reached into the officer's vehicle and fought him for his gun, Brown was so physically overpowering that the officer "felt like a 5-year-old holding onto Hulk Hogan."
