MichA le Flournoy has taken herself out of the running to be the next secretary of Defense, a prospect that would have made her the first woman to hold the job. She was widely considered a top pick for the position, having previously served as the Pentagon 's undersecretary for policy for former Defense secretaries Robert Gates and Leon Panetta.
