Menino brought campaigns to a screeching halt five days before Election Day, as candidates canceled their public events out of respect for his passing. Charlie Baker, the Republican candidate for governor, was taking questions from reporters at an Attleboro press conference when state Represenative Steve S. Howitt, a Seekonk Republican, broke in with the news that the mayor of two decades had died.
