Farmers typically have two ways to sell their food locally: a direct approach, which is through farmers markets, roadside stands, and farm stores; and through intermediated market channels, which would be to grocers, restaurants, and schools. In 2012, around 163,000 farmers sold $6.1 billion in local foods, 48,000 farmers sold $4.8 billion to intermediated channels, which is increasing according to USDA's Economic Research Service.
