Senate race among nation's most hotly contested

Two veteran politicians are vying for a U.S. Senate seat occupied by the same man since the Carter administration, and both believe they have a credible shot at filling it - with a great deal of outside support. Democrat Carl Levin's retirement after 36 years gives Republicans an opening in the Nov. 4 election to capture a Senate seat for the first time in two decades in a state where they have struggled in presidential and Senate races.
